At a glance
Gemini is Google's AI assistant. It handles chat, writing, search, image and video generation, and research in one app, and connects directly to Google services such as Gmail, Docs, Drive and YouTube. As of October 2026, the plans are Free / Google AI Plus / Pro / Ultra (two tiers, 5x and 20x), aimed at individuals who use the Google ecosystem a lot, heavy users who work with video and coding, and companies (Gemini Enterprise).

Note: Google's help pages label the app's models only as "Flash-Lite / Flash / Pro", and they roll out in stages by plan, country and account, so the choices you actually see may differ.
Free users' "default model" versus "models they can use": The model access table in Google's usage limits help shows that users without a plan can use all of Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro (with "standard limits"). However, according to a separate official change notice, from October 9, 2026 free users cannot choose a model directly and can only use the default setting, Auto. Auto handles most questions with Flash-Lite and may send hard questions to Flash or Pro. If you turn off smart model selection, every answer comes from Flash-Lite. In other words, Flash and Pro may be used on the Free plan, but users cannot choose them directly. For AI Plus, Google says it will announce the change date by email, and whether Plus keeps Pro access is not clear in the official table (the plan page currently shows 3.1 Pro as included).

Which plan for whom
- Free: Enough if you ask the occasional question and make a few images. However, from October you cannot choose the model directly and most answers come from Flash-Lite (Flash/Pro may be used for hard questions), so complex work may fall short.
- Google AI Plus: Recommended for students and light daily users. For the price of a cup of coffee you get better models, short video generation and 400GB of storage.
- Google AI Pro: The safest choice for office workers and developers who use it for daily work. You can feed in long documents whole with the 1M context, and it includes Gmail/Docs integration, 5TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite, so the value is good if you use Google a lot.
- Google AI Ultra (5x): For video creators, researchers who need Deep Think, and power users who want to try agent features first.
- Google AI Ultra (20x): For professionals who mass-produce video with Flow or run coding agents all day with Antigravity/Jules.
- Gemini Enterprise: Recommended for teams and companies that need company data security and admin features.
